Why Are My Gums Inflamed Even Though I Brush and Floss Daily?

Inflamed gums can be frustrating and uncomfortable, especially if you brush and floss every day. It can leave you asking questions like “Why are my gums swollen even though I brush and floss?” or “Why do my gums hurt even though I brush and floss?” Swollen gums, even with good hygiene, can indicate something more serious is developing, like gingivitis.

Plaque and Tartar Can Still Build Up

A common reason for ongoing gum inflammation is plaque buildup in areas that are hard to reach at home, even with a good oral care routine. Plaque and bacteria can collect below the gumline or between crowded teeth, which irritates the gum tissue over time and can lead to gingivitis or early gum disease. When plaque sits on your teeth, even just between brushes, it hardens into tartar, which you can’t remove at home.

Your Brushing and Flossing Technique Matters

There is such a thing as brushing too aggressively. This, along with using a harder-bristle toothbrush, can contribute to gum irritation and recession. Dr. Brad Crump recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle brushing technique.

Even if you floss every day, the way you floss can affect your gums. Snapping floss into the gum tissue may leave your gums sore or irritated. Instead, guide the floss carefully between your teeth and along the sides of each tooth to remove buildup without irritating your gums. Some patients find floss picks, water flossers, or interdental brushes easier to use.

What Causes Gingivitis?

Many patients wonder, “Why do I have gingivitis even with good hygiene?” In many cases, plaque accumulates in areas that are difficult to clean at home. Gingivitis develops when plaque and bacteria build up along the gumline, irritating the tissue. We emphasize regular cleanings and good oral hygiene habits to help remove this plaque because once it hardens into tartar, bacteria become much more difficult to remove, and the inflammation can get worse.

Other factors that can cause gingivitis and periodontal disease include smoking, tobacco use, hormonal changes, diabetes, and dry mouth.

Figure Out Why Your Gums Are Inflamed

You may ask yourself, “Why is my gum inflamed?” Healthy gums depend on more than daily brushing and flossing. Regular professional cleanings help prevent gingivitis from worsening and help lower your risk of developing gum disease in the future. Addressing inflammation early can also help prevent deeper infection and damage.
