Dental Implants: How long is the treatment process?

Dental implants provide a permanent and natural solution to tooth loss. Whether you have lost one or more teeth to decay, disease, or trauma; you can have the ability to chew, speak, and smile with self-confidence restored. A consultation with your periodontist will explain the process.

The length of treatment is a variable that differs with each patient. Prior to the onset of treatment the patient will undergo a conversation about their overall health; once this hurdle is cleared, an extensive dental examination is completed.

The periodontist requires dental x-rays to determine bone strength in the jaw where the implant will be placed. There are procedures to enhance jawbone, if needed; but this may add to the treatment time.

A dental implant is a titanium post that is placed surgically in gum tissue where tooth loss has occurred. Titanium is the metal of choice as research has proven that the jawbone will graft to this metal so completely, the implant will provide sufficient strength to support the restoration much like the roots of a natural tooth support the tooth’s crown (the area seen above the gumline).

A healing period ensues … this can take several months. During this time, the patient is taught how to keep the implant area clean to prevent infection. Tobacco use is restricted as infection and smoking are the leading causes of implant failure.

During the healing period, bone is grafting to the implant … a process known as osseointegration. Throughout the months of healing, the patient will likely visit the periodontist several times to make sure healing is moving forward appropriately.

Upon completion, the restoration is ready to be placed. The cosmetic portion of treatment can be completed in one day. An abutment is attached to the implant allowing the restoration to be tried in for fit, appearance, and function; minor adjustments can be made at chairside, if needed.

Cementing the restoration in place will complete the process. The patient leaves the office with the ability to eat all their favorite foods, speak without fear of their dental work slipping, and laugh with joy. Tooth loss has been restored with the closest replacement to biological teeth.
